Your new earbuds should not take half your commute to connect. Learning how to pair wireless earbuds is usually quick, whether you use an iPhone, Android phone, laptop or tablet. The key is putting the earbuds into pairing mode before searching for them in your device’s Bluetooth settings.
Most wireless earbuds follow the same basic process, but the light on the case, the button position and the name shown on screen can vary by brand. Keep the charging case nearby, make sure both earbuds have some battery, and you will normally be listening within a minute or two.
How to pair wireless earbuds for the first time
Start by charging the earbuds and their case. They do not need to be at 100%, but a low battery can stop one earbud switching on or cause pairing to fail halfway through. Remove both earbuds from the case and place them in your ears, or leave them close to your phone if the manufacturer recommends that method.
Many new earbuds enter pairing mode automatically the first time they are removed from the case. Look for a flashing light, often white, blue or red and blue. If nothing flashes, press and hold the button on the case or touch-and-hold both earbuds for a few seconds. The exact timing differs, but five to ten seconds is common.
Next, open Bluetooth settings on your device and turn Bluetooth on. Wait for the earbuds’ name to appear under available devices, then tap or click it. You may hear a tone, a voice prompt such as “connected”, or see a steady light when the connection is complete.
If a code is requested, try 0000 or 1234, although most modern earbuds do not require one. Once paired, your device should remember the earbuds and reconnect automatically when Bluetooth is on and the earbuds are out of the case.
Pairing earbuds with a phone or tablet
iPhone and iPad
Open Settings, choose Bluetooth, and make sure Bluetooth is switched on. Put the earbuds into pairing mode, then look under “Other Devices”. Tap the earbuds’ name and wait for “Connected” to appear.
Some earbuds show a battery icon or an information button beside their name after pairing. This is useful for checking charge levels, renaming the earbuds or choosing whether they connect automatically. If you use an iPhone and an iPad signed into the same account, certain earbuds may switch between them, but this depends on the model.
Android phones and tablets
Open Settings and select Connected devices, Bluetooth or Connections. The wording changes between Samsung, Google, Xiaomi and other manufacturers. Choose the option to pair a new device, then select your earbuds from the list.
Android may ask for permission to access contacts or calls. Allow this if you want to use the earbuds’ built-in microphones for hands-free calls. If you only want them for music, podcasts or video, audio connection will still work without every permission enabled.
A useful check on Android is the Bluetooth settings page for the connected earbuds. Make sure both “Media audio” and “Phone calls” are turned on if you expect sound and calls through the earbuds.
How to pair wireless earbuds with a laptop
Wireless earbuds are handy for video calls, study sessions and working from a café, but laptops can be slightly less direct than phones. Put the earbuds in pairing mode first, then start the search from your computer.
Windows laptops
On Windows 11, open Settings, select Bluetooth & devices, then choose Add device. Select Bluetooth and click your earbuds when they appear. Windows should confirm that the device is ready to use.
After pairing, check that the earbuds are selected as your sound output. Click the speaker icon on the taskbar and choose the earbuds from the audio device list. For calls, open the sound settings in Teams, Zoom or your chosen app and select the earbuds as both speaker and microphone if needed.
If the audio sounds thin or poor during a call, Windows may be using the hands-free call profile rather than the higher-quality stereo profile. That is normal for many Bluetooth earbuds because the microphone and stereo audio cannot always run at full quality together. For music and films, choose the stereo output option where available.
MacBook
Open the Apple menu, go to System Settings, then Bluetooth. Switch Bluetooth on, find the earbuds and click Connect. If they connect but sound continues through the MacBook speakers, open Sound in System Settings and select the earbuds under Output.
For video calls, also check Input. Selecting the earbuds as the microphone is convenient, but the MacBook’s built-in microphone can sometimes sound clearer, especially in a noisy room. It depends on the earbuds and where you are working.
If your earbuds will not appear in Bluetooth settings
The most common reason is that the earbuds are connected to another device already. For example, they may reconnect to the phone in your pocket before your laptop can find them. Turn Bluetooth off on the other device temporarily, place the earbuds back in the case for ten seconds, then try again.
Also make sure the earbuds are genuinely in pairing mode, not simply switched on. A steady light often means they are connected, while a flashing light usually means they are ready to pair. Check the product instructions if the light pattern is unclear.
Distance matters too. Keep the phone, tablet or laptop within a metre of the earbuds during setup. Bluetooth normally works across a room after connection, but walls, crowded train carriages and other wireless devices can reduce range or cause drop-outs.
If only one earbud connects, return both earbuds to the charging case and check that the charging contacts are clean. A little dust or pocket fluff can prevent an earbud charging properly. Wipe the contacts carefully with a dry, soft cloth, charge the case, then remove both earbuds together and reconnect.
Forget and reset when pairing keeps failing
When your phone can see the earbuds but refuses to connect, remove the old connection and begin again. In Bluetooth settings, tap the earbuds’ name and choose Forget, Unpair or Remove device. Then put the earbuds back into pairing mode and pair them as if they were new.
A full reset is worth trying if the left and right earbuds will not work together, the name never appears, or they keep connecting and disconnecting. Reset methods vary, but commonly involve placing both earbuds in the case and holding the case button for around ten to fifteen seconds until the light changes colour. Some models require holding both touch controls instead.
Resetting clears saved devices, so you will need to pair the earbuds again with your phone, laptop or tablet. It is a small inconvenience, but it often fixes connection issues caused by switching between several devices.
Get better sound after you connect
Pairing is only the first step. Check the fit of the ear tips before deciding the sound quality is poor. A loose fit reduces bass, lets in more outside noise and can make one earbud seem quieter than the other. Try the different tip sizes supplied with the earbuds, if available.
Then turn up volume from both the device and the earbuds themselves, as some models keep separate volume levels. On a phone, make sure audio is being sent to the earbuds rather than the speaker. If you hear no sound, start playing a track or video, open the audio output control and select the connected earbuds.
For commuting, calls and everyday listening, keep the case charged as well as the earbuds. The case is not just storage – it is the easiest way to keep them ready for the next journey. A reliable USB-C cable or compact charger can save a frustrating low-battery moment when you need your audio most.
When it is a fault, not a pairing problem
If the earbuds will not charge, one side remains silent after a reset, or they repeatedly disconnect beside a fully charged device, the issue may be hardware rather than Bluetooth settings. Try them with a second phone first. If the same fault happens there, the earbuds, case or charging contacts may need attention.
