A laptop that only charges at a certain angle, keeps switching between charging and not charging, or has gone completely flat can stop work in its tracks. Before assuming the laptop battery has failed, learning how to test laptop charger properly can help you narrow down the fault quickly. In many cases, the problem is a damaged cable, loose connector or unsuitable replacement adapter rather than the laptop itself.
You do not need advanced technical skills for the first checks. A visual inspection, the right wall socket and a basic multimeter can tell you a great deal. The key is to work safely: laptop chargers connect to mains power, so never open the power brick or attempt a repair inside it.
Start with the simple charger checks
First, plug the charger directly into a known working wall socket. Avoid extension leads, multi-way adapters and USB hubs while testing, as these can introduce another point of failure. Check whether the charging LED on the laptop comes on and whether the battery icon changes after a few minutes.
If your charger has an LED light on the power brick, look at that too. No light can indicate a failed adapter, but it can also mean a faulty socket or mains lead. Some USB-C laptop chargers do not have an indicator light, so its absence is not proof of a fault.
Next, inspect the entire charger before plugging it in again. Look closely at the cable where it meets the power brick and where it meets the charging connector. These are the areas that bend most often in backpacks, under desks and beside the sofa.
Stop using the charger if you notice exposed wire, splitting insulation, scorch marks, a burning smell, unusual buzzing, a swollen adapter case or excessive heat. A charger can become warm during use, especially when charging a low battery, but it should not be too hot to touch comfortably. Damaged mains accessories are not worth taking a chance on.
Check the plug, cable and laptop port
A charger may appear fine until you move the cable. With the laptop switched on, connect the charger and gently move the lead near each end. Do not bend it sharply or force the connector. If charging cuts in and out, the cable may have an internal break or the laptop’s charging port may be loose.
Check the connector for dirt, bent pins or physical damage. On older barrel-style chargers, the central pin should be straight and the outer metal sleeve should not be loose. On USB-C chargers, look for debris in both the cable ends and the laptop port. Pocket lint can prevent the plug from seating fully.
Use a dry, soft brush or a short burst of compressed air to clear loose debris. Do not poke the port with metal tools, liquid or anything that can damage the internal contacts. If the plug feels loose in the laptop even when it is clean, the charging port may need professional repair.
It also helps to separate a charger problem from a laptop problem. If possible, try a known-good compatible charger with the laptop. Alternatively, test your charger on another compatible device. Compatibility matters here: matching the connector alone is not enough, particularly with USB-C.
How to test laptop charger output with a multimeter
A multimeter gives a clearer answer when the charger looks intact but does not charge the laptop. You need a digital multimeter set to measure DC voltage, shown as V with a straight line and dotted line beneath it. Do not use the resistance or current settings for this test.
Read the label on the power brick first. Find the line marked “Output”. Many laptop chargers are rated at 19V or 20V DC, while USB-C chargers may list several output levels, such as 5V, 9V, 15V and 20V. The voltage is what you will compare against your multimeter reading.
For a barrel connector, follow these steps:
- Plug the charger into the wall socket, keeping the connector clear of metal objects.
- Set the multimeter to DC volts, choosing a range higher than the output shown on the charger label.
- Touch the black probe to the outside metal barrel of the connector.
- Carefully touch the red probe to the centre pin or inner contact, without allowing the two probes to touch each other.
- Read the display and compare it with the stated output voltage.
A reading close to the printed voltage is usually a good sign. For example, a 19V charger reading around 18.5V to 19.5V is normally within a reasonable tolerance. A zero reading, a reading that jumps around dramatically or a figure far below the stated output suggests the charger may be faulty.
Be aware that a correct voltage reading does not guarantee the charger is perfect. It may still fail when the laptop demands power, especially if a wire is damaged internally or the adapter cannot supply enough current under load. This is why testing with a compatible laptop remains useful.
Testing USB-C laptop chargers
USB-C is more complicated than a barrel connector. Modern USB-C chargers communicate with the laptop to agree the voltage and power level required. A basic multimeter placed against a USB-C plug will not reliably show whether the charger can deliver its advertised 45W, 65W or 100W output.
For USB-C, start with the label. Check the charger provides enough wattage for your laptop. A 20W mobile phone charger may show that it is charging, but it can be too weak to charge the battery while you are working, and may only slow down battery drain. A 65W charger can be suitable for many everyday laptops, while larger performance models may need 90W, 100W or more.
The most reliable option is to use a USB-C power meter, which sits between the charger and cable and displays negotiated voltage, current and wattage. This can reveal whether the charger is supplying power and whether the cable is limiting it. A low-quality or worn USB-C cable can be the fault, even when the power adapter works.
Do not assume any USB-C charger is interchangeable. Check the laptop manufacturer’s required wattage, use a quality cable rated for the power needed and choose a charger that supports USB Power Delivery where required.
Know what the results are telling you
If the charger has no power, fails the multimeter test or has visible damage, replace it with a correctly rated model. Match the voltage, use the correct connector and make sure the charger can supply at least the laptop’s required wattage. Higher wattage is generally acceptable with a compatible USB-C Power Delivery charger because the laptop controls what it draws. Lower wattage can mean slow charging, warning messages or no charging at all.
If the charger tests normally but the laptop will not charge, the issue could be the charging port, battery, DC-in board or internal power circuit. Check the laptop’s battery health report or built-in diagnostics if available. A laptop that works from the charger but dies instantly when unplugged often points to a worn battery rather than a failed adapter.
There are a few signs that need a repair check rather than more testing: a loose or pushed-in charging port, sparks, a crackling sound, a charger that repeatedly disconnects, or a laptop that will not power on with a confirmed compatible charger. Continuing to use it can make a small port fault more expensive.
When replacement makes more sense than repair
Laptop power adapters are sealed units. If the cable is split, the brick rattles, the casing is damaged or the charger has failed electrically, replacement is usually the safer and more cost-effective option. Avoid very cheap unbranded adapters with vague specifications. They can run hot, provide unstable power or lack the safety protections expected from a quality charger.
For a replacement, take the old adapter or your laptop model details with you. This makes it easier to confirm the connector, voltage and wattage.
